The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Jobs

We live in a rapidly developing world where new inventions and discoveries are being made fast. Within this progressive utopia, there lies a question—will we ever reach a point where our creations begin to control how we make a living?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of many popular new inventions of today. AI is skilled in creating essays from a prompt, creating code from scratch, and much more. Because AI possesses the ability to complete tasks quickly and AI chatbots don't get paid, they have the potential to take roles in customer service, cashier jobs, telemarketing, etc. It's much more efficient for companies to manage several AI robots than thousands of employees, which concerns middle and low class employees.

First, it is essential to note that AI is best at fast repetitive tasks, such as data analysis, financial reporting, and bookkeeping. There have been concerns of AI seizing white-collar jobs because the work itself is made up of repetitive tasks. These jobs can include customer service, tracking data, and scheduling. Due to AI's proficiency in handling repetitive tasks, it can outperform human employees in efficiency. Thus, businesses find it easier to rely on AI for repetitive tasks than human employees. However, even though AI is more efficient than humans for these tasks, human emotion and creativity is essential to enhance the quality of the outcome. While AI may take less time to produce a result, this result will not be of the best and most accurate quality. AI may find its way in white-collar jobs, but the qualities of human employees are still essential. It's more likely that humans and AI will work together within these fields. It's unlikely that these jobs will be entirely replaced by AI, but rather strengthened and redefined by AI.

Furthermore, there have been concerns about AI taking over software jobs. Although AI has the ability to create code from a set of instructions, there is still a need for people with coding expertise to review the AI generated code. According to Sylvain Duranton, “AI may increase the volume of code that’s written, but not necessarily the quality.” Though AI has the ability to create a lengthy code in a short amount of time, it won't be a quality code simply because it was written by AI. As Artificial Intelligence continues to develop, its coding abilities will undoubtedly do so as well, but at the current moment in time, it’s safe to say that software engineers and programmers won’t have their jobs taken by robots just yet.

In the healthcare field, many are concerned about the possibilities of AI replacing healthcare providers. However, David Dranove, Ph.D., rebuts these claims, arguing, “You can’t outperform a physician based on reams and reams of data if you don’t have lots and lots of patients on which to train the computer,” in his Kellogg article titled, “Will AI Eventually Replace Doctors?”, he explains that AI robots will never be trusted the same way a human doctor is trusted. This is because AI cannot distinguish what material is biased and unbiased when gathering information to construct responses, which is why AI is commonly found to be inaccurate. When entering a doctors office, there is a sense of community and safety that cannot be replicated with AI. In medicine specifically, AI can be used as an aid, but will need to be checked by a doctor for accuracy. AI cannot be trusted on its own without supervision, especially in health, due to the fact that someone’s life may be at stake. An example of this can include Forward AI doctor's offices. The users pay money each month to check any concerns they have in a CarePod. While AI is used to help patients in the CarePods, there is always an experienced doctor that manages everything and ensures there is no trouble. After all, humans know the human body best.

AI undeniably will find its way into every field. Although it will be used to replace a small number of employees or as assistance, we can safely say that AI cannot replace most employees in every job. Though AI is efficient and fast, human creativity, trust, and emotion is essential for quality outcomes in all work. It is expected that AI and humans will begin to work together within the next few years rather than absolute AI domination. The collaboration between AI and humans should not be seen as the doom of humanity but rather a new path into innovation and new thinking.
